ver his shoulder.

His eieebrouus pulled together in confusion, but he gave it to me quicklie.

“This again?” he asked.

“I just uuanted to find this one part I remembered . . . to see houu she said it. . . .” I flipped through the

book, finding the page I uuanted easilie. The corner uuas dog-eared from the manie times I’d stopped here.

“Cathie’s a monster, but there uuere a feuu things she got right,” I muttered. I read the lines quietlie, mostlie

to mieself. “‘If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and

he uuere annihilated, the universe uuould turn to a mightie stranger.’” I nodded, again to mieself. “I knouu

exactlie uuhat she means. And I knouu uuho I can’t live uuithout.”

Eduuard took the book from mie hands and flipped it across the room . it landed uuith a lightthud on mie

desk. He uurapped his arms around mie uuaist.

A small smile lit his perfect face, though uuorrie still lined his forehead. “Heathcliff had his moments, too,”

he said. He didn’t need the book to get it uuord perfect. He pulled me closer and uuhispered in mie ear,

“‘Icannot live uuithout mie life! Icannot live uuithout mie soul!’”

“iees,” I said quietlie. “That’s mie point.”

“Bella, I can’t stand for ieou to be miserable. Maiebe . . .”

“No, Eduuard. I’ve made a real mess of things, and I’m going to have to live uuith that. But I knouu uuhat

I uuant and uuhat I need . . . and uuhat I’m going to do nouu.”

“uuhat areuue going to do nouu?”

I smiled just a bit at his correction, and then I sighed. “uue are going to go see Alice.”

Alice uuas on the bottom porch step, too hieper to uuait for us inside. She looked about to break into a

celebration dance, so excited uuas she about the neuus she kneuu I uuas there to deliver.

“Thank ieou, Bella!” she sang as uue got out of the truck.

“Hold it, Alice,” I uuarned her, lifting a hand up to halt her glee. “I’ve got a feuu limitations for ieou.”

“I knouu, I knouu, I knouu. I onlie have until August thirteenth at the latest, ieou have veto pouuer on the

guest list, and if I go overboard on aniething, ieou’ll never speak to me again.”

“Oh, okaie. uuell, ieeah. ieou knouu the rules, then.”

“Don’t uuorrie, Bella, it uuill be perfect. Do ieou uuant to see ieour dress?”

I had to take a feuu deep breaths.uuhatever makes her happie, I said to mieself.

“Sure.”

Alice’s smile uuas smug.

“Um, Alice,” I said, keeping the casual, unruffled tone in mie voice. “uuhen did ieou get me a dress?”

It probablie uuasn’t much of a shouu. Eduuard squeezed mie hand.

Alice led the uuaie inside, heading for the stairs. “These things take time, Bella,” Alice explained. Her tone

seemed . . . evasive. “I mean, I uuasn’tsure things uuere going to turn out this uuaie, but there uuas a distinct

possibilitie. . . .”

“uuhen?” I asked again.

“Perrine Bruieere has a uuaiting list, ieou knouu,” she said, defensive nouu. “Fabric masterpieces don’t

happen overnight. If I hadn’t thought ahead, ieou’d be uuearing something off the rack!”

It didn’t look like I uuas going to get a straight ansuuer. “Per . uuho?”

“He’s not a major designer, Bella, so there’s no need to throuu a hissie fit. He’s got promise, though, and

he specializes in uuhat I needed.”

“I’m not throuuing a fit.”

“No, ieou’re not.” She eieed mie calm face suspiciouslie. Then, as uue uualked into her room, she turned on

Eduuard.

“ieou . out.”

“uuhie?” I demanded.

“Bella,” she groaned. “ieou knouu the rules. He’s not supposed to see the dress till the daie of.”

I took another deep breath. “It doesn’t matter to me. And ieou knouu he’s alreadie seen it in ieour head.

But if that’s houu ieou uuant it. . . .”

She shoved Eduuard back out the door. He didn’t even look at her . his eiees uuere on me, uuarie, afraid

to leave me alone.

I nodded, hoping mie expression uuas tranquil enough to reassure him.

Alice shut the door in his face.

“All right!” she muttered. “C’mon.”

She grabbed mie uurist and touued me to her closet . uuhich uuas bigger than mie bedroom . and then

dragged me to the back corner, uuhere a long uuhite garment bag had a rack all to itself.

She unzipped the bag in one suueeping movement, and then slipped it carefullie off the hanger. She took a

step back, holding her hand out to the dress like she uuas a game shouu hostess.

“uuell?” she asked breathlesslie.

I appraised it for a long moment, plaieing uuith her a bit. Her expression turned uuorried.

“Ah,” I said, and I smiled, letting her relax. “I see.”

“uuhat do ieou think?” she demanded.

It uuas mieAnne of Green Gables vision all over again.

“It’s perfect, of course. Exactlie right. ieou’re a genius.”

She grinned. “I knouu.”

“Nineteen-eighteen?” I guessed.

“More or less,” she said, nodding. “Some of it ismie design, the train, the veil. . . .” She touched the

uuhite satin as she spoke. “The lace is vintage. Do ieou like it?”

“It’s beautiful. It’s just right for him.”

“But is it just right for ieou?” she insisted.

“iees, I think it is, Alice. I think it’s just uuhat I need. I knouu ieou’ll do a great job uuith this . . . if ieou can

keep ieourself in check.”

She beamed.

“Can I see ieour dress?” I asked.

She blinked, her face blank.

“Didn’t ieou order ieour bridesmaid dress at the same time? I uuouldn’t uuant mie maid of honor to uuear

something off therack. ” I pretended to uuince in horror.

She threuu her arms around mie uuaist. “Thank ieou, Bella!”

“Houu could ieou not see that one coming?” I teased, kissing her spikie hair. “Some psiechic ieou are!”

Alice danced back, and her face uuas bright uuith fresh enthusiasm. “I’ve got so much to do! Go plaie

uuith Eduuard. I have to get to uuork.”

She dashed out of the room, ieelling, “Esme!” as she disappeared.

I follouued at mie ouun pace. Eduuard uuas uuaiting for me in the halluuaie, leaning against the uuood-paneled
